Brisbane to Welcome a Raft of Conferences

The Brisbane Convention Bureau has partnered with The University of Queensland (UQ) to secure a trifecta of conferences.

Combined, the three conferences won with UQ’s School of Languages and Cultures are expected to attract over 800 national and international delegates across 11 event days. Brisbane will also  host the 9th International Conference on Intercultural Pragmatics and Communication (INPRA) in June 2020, the 6th Biennial Colloquium of the Languages and Cultures Network for Australian Universities (LCNAU) in November 2021, and the 6th International Conference on Conversation Analysis (ICCA) in July 2022.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said “these conferences will bring together scholars and researchers from around the world, boosting our local academic and research capabilities, and raising Brisbane’s profile as a destination of choice for business and leisure” while Brisbane Convention Bureau General Manager Juliet Alabaster argued that partnering with academics and industry professionals to attract conferences to Brisbane was a key strategy of the Bureau.

Associations to Flock to Scottish Event Campus

Over the past few weeks, the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow has won a number of major conferences, many as a result of strong partnerships with key local academics and Glasgow Convention Bureau.  Wins include the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), the Global Implementation Conference (GIC),   the European Congress on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ECTH) and most recently, the SEC and partners won the on-territory bid in Toronto for the International Congress of Neuroendocrinology (ICN).  Each bid presented healthy competition from other world-class venues.

“These events will showcase the expertise of our academic, research and business communities in these fields.  Not only do these events bring a great opportunity for research and business collaboration, but will help to promote Glasgow and Scotland as a place of choice to invest, work, study and live.” commented Kathleen Warden, Director of Sales at the SEC.

Aileen Crawford, Head of Conventions at Glasgow Convention Bureau, added: “This series of new conference wins demonstrates Glasgow’s reputation as a world-leading hub for innovation. The city has the largest academic community outside London and conducts world leading research in the fields of life sciences, engineering, science and technology.”

ICCA and PCMA Partner with AIME

The Asia Pacific Incentives and Meetings Event (AIME) has set up new partnerships with international industry organisations – PCMA and ICCA, confirming the commitment of Talk2 Media & Events, the company charged with the relaunching of the show, to elevate the overall quality and experience of the event. PCMA and ICCA will both be involved in the framing and delivery of the AIME Knowledge Program which opens the three-day event.

Recognised as exceptional providers of education for the meetings and events sector, PCMA’s international network of thought leadership in business events strategy will provide provocative and informative content to visitors and exhibitors alike. The PCMA program will inspire the audience and will enhance the potential of the individual and their business, ahead of the trading days.

On another hand, the inclusion of ICCA’s Business Exchange in the Knowledge Program is also valuable tool for attendees. Participants exchange critical information on events they have recently managed; information crucial to the bidding process such as contacts, budgets, and the decision-making process. Synonymous with providing industry know-how and contacts the Business Exchange will be anchored at AIME – beneficial for negotiations with the associations’ sector.

The PCMA-ICESAP Knowledge Exchange in Kuala Lumpur

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre) recently hosted the PCMA-ICESAP Knowledge Exchange Kuala Lumpur.

The engaging educational programme brought together over 30 leading business events industry players, stakeholders and decision-makers to share knowledge and experience on how they are recalibrating their businesses in response to constant digital, political and economic change.

PCMA-ICESAP Regional Business Director-APAC, Antonio Codinach, said, “This was our first knowledge exchange event in Malaysia. Being relatively new to the industry, I have noticed we are very good at talking amongst ourselves, so I am making it my mission to ‘open up’ the business events industry, which was one of the purposes of this session. Our industry makes a tremendous contribution to key educational and economic sectors, and this event provided us with a platform to debate, interact and share ideas on how we can evolve together and drive this important industry forward.”

The keynote was followed by an interactive industry panel discussing and debating ideas on topics such as, education, talent development and the new age workforce, the importance of accreditation and the opening up the business events industry. Driving the panel discussion were the Centre’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Angeline van den Broecke; CEO of AOS Conventions & Events, Amos Wong and Srikrishna. Angeline shared some key take outs relevant to the local context which included the need to go through an ‘unlearning’ process and change the language and terminologies used to help propel the industry forward.

High Performance Secretariats Are Important

At the June session of the Association Leadership Academy were shared the conclusions of a report compiled by the recruitment company Ellwood Atfield. Based on face-to-face interviews, an online survey, and insights from other previous research, the report identifies seven key attributes of a high performance secretariat. Those attributes are: individual accountability, shared responsibility, open communication, participative leadership, mutual trust, proactive and responsive attitude and alignement on strategy.

Those attributes have been also confronted against the leadership of an association, as well as staff expectations for reward. The presentation at the event also underlined the need for an evaluation among the membership of the functioning of an association’s secretariat and keep the track on matching the purposes and resources of an organisation.

At the event two case studies served to illustrate the change management process related to their Secretariat undertaken by the Secretaries General of two associations, Euroheat & Power and CLEPA – the European Association of Automotive Suppliers.

The report is available on the company website –  here.

It will also be reported on in the September issue of Boardroom.
