London Reveals Itself to Obesity Surgeons

The 22nd World Congress of International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) took place at Central London International Conference Centre (CLICC) in central London on 29 August – 2 September 2017. The British Obesity & Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) are part of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons (AUGIS) and coordinated the event in London on behalf of the Federation.

The event used in combination both the spaces of QEII and Central Hall Westminster to bring together world leaders in metabolic and bariatric surgery to educate, discuss and collaborate. Attendees flew into London from all over the world, with their number reaching as high as over 2.500, in order to follow various events in smaller rooms as well as the plenary session and the exhibition in one larger area.

The bidding process started much earlier, with London & Partners suggesting the venue and PCO Travel for Industry Group (TFI) winning the bid, receiving support from various organisations in the sector. The UK excels in obesity surgery and the British government and the NHS (National Health Service) has prioritised obesity and metabolic disorders for some years now. As a result the UK, and in particular London, has become a knowledge hub for the sector.
