Athens has been named “World’s Leading Cultural City Destination 2024” at the World Travel Awards.
The award was presented during a glittering ceremony in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, on Sunday, 24 November.
The recognition highlights Athens’ growing prominence as a global cultural hub, reflecting its dynamic combination of ancient heritage and modern vibrancy.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas expressed immense pride: “This award proves Athens is a strong global brand in culture. It is a vibrant and welcoming city that seamlessly blends its rich history with a modern, upgraded image. Our ongoing investments in cultural events and initiatives continue to connect residents and visitors with Athens’ unique past and present.”
Ioannis Georgizas, CEO of Develop Athens, the city’s growth agency and operator of This is Athens – Convention & Visitors Bureau, accepted the award, saying: “This distinction is the result of systematic work aimed at showcasing Athens’ competitive advantages. Through Develop Athens, we are committed to attracting high-level tourism to drive the local economy while highlighting the city’s unique character.”
Athens emerged victorious against prestigious cities such as London, Paris, Rome, Kyoto, and Rio de Janeiro, with judges acknowledging its year-round cultural experiences and the enduring allure of its heritage.
