Ambassador Awards for Promoting Brussels

For several years now, the Brussels-Capital region has been making increased efforts to attract big international events. Based on this goal, visit.brussels launched for the first time last year the Brussels Ambassadors Night in order to reward the people who publicise Brussels confirming its status as an international MICE destination. The event is a new way of adding to the international prestige of Belgium’s capital city and of showcasing local talent and expertise.

Attended by 150 academics, doctors, European Commissioners, rectors, chairpersons and directors of international associations headquartered in Brussels, scientists, hospital directors and other partners, this year’s gala evening rewarded 12 partners with the title of ambassador for their contribution to making Brussels one of the world’s most important venues for association conferences. It took place at Hotel de la Post during a festive evening filled with networking and acrobatics.

Each year, conferences held in the Belgian capital account for 2.5 million overnight stays. These events bring in annual receipts of 632 million euros and employ over 18,000 people.

Do Away with Carbon at Westminster

Central Hall Westminster, London’s central conference centre, has launched a new initiative to make your meetings even more sustainable. As of January 2018, associations may ask the venue to use their carbon calculator for your upcoming event. This calculator will allow you to estimate the carbon impact of your event and either work to reduce it or undertake a carbon offset.

Using data from their partner Green Tourism, the calculator takes into consideration the carbon associated with the venue itself and the energy and water used by the venue space you are hiring. By choosing to offset, a procedure of neutralisation of a tonne of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) emitted in one place avoids the release of a tonne of CO2e elsewhere. Another way of offsetting is to absorb a tonne of CO2e is which would otherwise have remained in the atmosphere.

The venue will be donating all money donated to offset carbon throughout 2018 to The Woodland Trust, the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity.

SECC Celebrates 100 Years of Life

2018 is an important year for the Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre (SECC). Established in 1918 in Gothenburg, it celebrates its 100th anniversary with a series of activities throughout the year, including an anniversary weekend in April as well as a grant awarded to an individual or company that plans to develop an idea that supports the Swedish tourism industry.

Since its foundation, the centre served as a meeting place that brought together local and foreign manufacturers and merchants. The goal of the SECC has always been to promote trade and industry, according to Roger Holtback, chairman of the SECC foundation, by offering the best total experience to delegates. The first trade fair drew 530 exhibitors and over 42,000 visitors.

Today, the SECC and Gothia Towers, the hotel which is part of the Centre, attract almost two million visitors each year, shifting the goal of the centre to innovation and expansion. Carin Kindbom, President and CEO, explains: “We are seeing strong international demand and we want to satisfy the global market by being responsive and leading the way. “It will be increasingly important to have physical places where people can meet in the digital world, and we believe in the continuing growth of the meetings industry. We have big plans for expansion and we look forward with confidence to the next hundred years in the story of the SECC.”
