Cairns Hosts First-Ever Global Microbial Virus Conference Outside Europe

19th August 2024

The Cairns Convention Centre hosted the prestigious Viruses of Microbes (VoM) 2024 Conference this July.

Organised by the International Society for Viruses of Microorganisms, the event gathered over 500 global scientists, researchers, and industry leaders to discuss cutting-edge advancements in microbial virus research under the theme “Expanding our Viral Frontiers.”

This marks the first time the VoM Conference has been held outside Europe. The five-day programme covered topics such as virus-host interactions, phage therapy, and bioinformatics, with a special focus on early-career researchers.

VoM 2024 co-chair, Associate Professor Jeremy J. Barr, said: “The Cairns Convention Centre offers world-class facilities that perfectly met our conference needs. The city of Cairns, with its vibrant culture and stunning landscapes, is an ideal location for this international gathering. Our attendees were thrilled to explore the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, adding a special dimension to the scientific discussions.”

The conference was supported by Business Events Australia, Tourism & Events Queensland, and Tourism Tropical North Queensland, with Waldron Smith Management providing PCO services.
