©Glasgow Life “People Make Mathematics” was the idea behind Glasgow’s winning bid for the International Congress of Mathematicians, a message that placed collaboration and accessibility ahead of equations alone.
From 11 to 19 July 2030, thousands of mathematicians will gather at the Scottish Event Campus for the discipline’s most important international congress. It will be the first time Glasgow has hosted the event, which takes place every four years and includes the presentation of the Fields Medal, widely regarded as mathematics’ highest honour.
The bid was led by academics at the University of Glasgow with partners across the UK and Ireland. The associated General Assembly of the International Mathematical Union will take place in Dublin immediately beforehand, on 8 and 9 July.
Professor Michael Wemyss, Chair of Mathematics at the University of Glasgow, described the win as “a generational opportunity to game-change the profile of mathematics in the UK, Ireland and beyond.” The bid also emphasised mathematics’ reach into computer science, engineering, medical imaging and economics.
For the SEC, ICM 2030 follows a growing series of major scientific meetings, including the AGU Ocean Sciences Meeting and European Renal Association Congress in 2026.
