Australia’s Gold Coast Hosts a World of Ideas

8th January 2025

The 74th International Communication Association (ICA) Conference, held in June 2024, marked a turning point for the association’s premier annual gathering. Taking place on Australia’s Gold Coast, the conference welcomed over 4,000 academics, researchers, and industry professionals from 76 countries to explore the theme “Communication and Global Human Rights.” This event not only provided a platform for cutting-edge discourse but also highlighted the unique appeal of Australia as a destination for global business events.

Expanding Horizons

The decision to host the ICA Conference in Australia was strategic, aiming to bring accessibility and inclusiveness to members and scholars from across Asia and Oceania. Traditionally held in North America or Europe, this shift prioritized a truly global dialogue. “The reason we chose Australia was because it’s a part of the world where we have scholars from so many different countries in Oceania. It gave them an opportunity to be highlighted,” said Cynthia Stoll, a member of ICA.

Australia’s robust academic ecosystem and high-quality infrastructure played a critical role in the event’s success. The country is home to leading institutions in communication, media, and technology, fostering collaboration between local and international researchers. Delegates were not only inspired by the country’s natural beauty but also by its vibrant academic and cultural community.

The Gold Coast: Where Work Meets Leisure

The Gold Coast’s blend of world-class facilities and stunning natural landscapes offered attendees a unique experience. The conference took place at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC), located just a 10-minute walk from the beach. This convenience allowed participants to seamlessly transition between professional sessions and leisurely breaks.

“What I love about the Gold Coast is that I’m here for 10 days running this conference, and it’s a gruelling work trip, but it feels like I’m on vacation. I’ve been doing this for 30 years, and this is by far the most relaxed I’ve ever been at a conference,” remarked Laura Sawyer, Executive Director of ICA.

The relaxed yet professional environment extended beyond the venue. Delegates explored local attractions, enjoyed the surf beaches, and participated in cultural tours, many extending their stay with family to experience the region fully.

A Theme Rooted in Local Impact

The conference theme, “Communication and Global Human Rights,” resonated deeply in its Australian setting. Discussions on Indigenous rights and cultural history enriched the event, adding layers of meaning to the global conversations around human rights, climate change, and food insecurity.

Pre- and post-conference activities further amplified the impact of the event. Delegates engaged with local universities and research centres, fostering collaboration between Australian and international scholars. This exchange of ideas promises a lasting legacy, influencing research and communication practices globally.

Collaborative Success

Securing the ICA Conference for 2024 was the result of a collaborative effort by Experience Gold Coast, Tourism and Events Queensland, and Business Events Australia. After the original 2020 conference pivoted to a virtual format due to the pandemic, Team Australia successfully bid to bring the event back in its next Asia-Pacific rotation.

The Gold Coast’s hospitality and operational excellence were key highlights. “The fact that this place has the same people just says a lot about the stability of the entire operation. And they’re all so nice. The answer is yes to everything, and they’ll figure out a way to make it happen,” Sawyer added, underscoring the destination’s reputation for service excellence.

With its perfect blend of professional enrichment, cultural engagement, and breathtaking surroundings, the 74th ICA Conference not only set a new benchmark for international communication events but also solidified Australia’s standing as a premier destination for business and academic gatherings.
