Sustainable Focus Good For Business

29th April 2025

New Zealand’s world-class convention centre, Te Pae Christchurch, is proving a focus on sustainability, cultural connection and community engagement is not only good for the environment, but also good for business.

Since opening in May 2022, Te Pae Christchurch has played a key role in reinvigorating Christchurch city, while delivering a sizeable boost to New Zealand’s economy. Hosting over 220 national and international conferences, exhibitions, banquets, meetings, and live entertainment events in 2024, the convention centre has contributed significantly to the country’s GDP and revitalised the local community.

With sustainability a key pillar of success from the initial planning stage for Te Pae Christchurch, General Manager Ross Steele says the organisation’s fundamental role is to leave a lasting positive legacy for the region.

“We understand that clients and visitors are not only seeking to be engaged, entertained and enriched by their attendance at a conference or event – they also want an authentic and impactful experience,” says Ross.

“For us, that means showcasing the best of our region – from local wine and food producers to entertainers and creatives, while supporting local businesses. We are passionate about partnering with clients to organise greener events, which is key to meeting sustainability goals and minimising the impact of the events we host. In addition to sustainable operations initiatives such as no-waste coffee carts, milk in kegs and reusable coffee cups, we work alongside our suppliers, clients, and delegates to “go green”.

Respect for the unique Māori heritage and culture is central to the identity of the venue. Inspired by the indigenous people and the natural beauty of the region, a strong sense of place is reflected in the award-winning design of this landmark building. Every guest has the opportunity to experience a meaningful connection with the local iwi (Māori tribe)—whether through a ceremonial welcome, cultural performance during a conference, or by engaging with the rich stories behind the artworks and design elements found throughout the Centre.

“Our focus on cultural and environmental sustainability guides every decision we make,” says Ross. “This enables us to demonstrate international leadership on vitally important issues for conference organisers, delegates and our community, while ensuring we are providing a deep sense of purpose to our team.”

This focus has been well recognised, locally, nationally, and internationally through various award wins and accreditations. Te Pae Christchurch is the first convention centre in the world to achieve Toitū Net Carbon Zero certification by New Zealand’s leading climate certification organisation, verification that our venue is actively working to reduce our emissions and environmental impact

With a strong pipeline of events for the year ahead, including the 34th Congress of the International Seed Testing Association, International Society of Arboriculture, Adaptation Futures Conference and International Cool Climate Wine Symposium, the experienced team is focused on delivering exceptional experiences and ensuring that Te Pae Christchurch continues to deliver positive economic, social and environmental impacts for the region.
