Wellington will host the Indigenous Wellbeing Conference from 10 to 12 October 2027, welcoming up to 400 delegates from Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, the Pacific and beyond.
Taking place at Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre, the annual gathering centres Indigenous voices, knowledge systems and lived experience. Its discussions will span health, mental health, education, justice, culture, community services, research and policy, with a focus on approaches shaped by culture, community authority and self-determination.
The conference is hosted by the Australian & New Zealand Mental Health Association. Its successful bid was supported by Business Events Wellington and Tourism New Zealand Business Events.
Wellington’s proposal connected the practical requirements of the meeting with local expertise and cultural experience. Support included engagement with iwi, associations and academics, alongside opportunities for marae visits, waka experiences and tours exploring the Indigenous landscape of Pōneke.
The capital’s concentration of policymakers also creates potential for the conversations to reach beyond the conference itself. Dr Grant Davidson, Chief Executive of Hauora Taiwhenua Rural Health Network, said: “Wellington is home to Aotearoa New Zealand’s Parliament, making access to decision-makers easy.”
The event will bring together Indigenous leaders, knowledge holders, practitioners, researchers, educators, policymakers and community organisations to share initiatives already strengthening wellbeing.
