Bay of Islands to Welcome World’s Marine Mapping Experts in 2027

22nd August 2025

Paihia in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands will host GeoHab 2027, the premier international conference for Marine Geological and Biological Habitat Mapping.

Around 200 scientists, industry leaders and technical specialists will gather to advance sustainable ocean management.

The successful bid was led by Dr Sally Watson, marine geophysicist at Earth Sciences New Zealand and the University of Auckland, supported by Tourism New Zealand Business Events.

“Marine mapping underpins how we use and protect our oceans,” said Dr Watson. “With climate change altering ecosystems so rapidly, it’s vital to know what’s beneath the surface. Hosting this conference in New Zealand – in the heart of the Bay of Islands – makes perfect sense.”

GeoHab president Dr Mary Young of Deakin University added: “The Bay of Islands is culturally significant and ecologically rich. Bringing the global community here will strengthen Asia-Pacific collaboration and inspire the next generation of ocean researchers.”

The win forms part of Tourism New Zealand’s drive to attract major earth science events, building on the country’s reputation as a “natural laboratory”.

Tourism New Zealand Global Manager Business Events, Penelope Ryan, noted: “Paihia’s spectacular environment provides delegates with unique opportunities for both learning and exploration.”

Delegates will also experience the region’s natural and cultural highlights, from the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to kauri forests and marine activities.

Dr Watson hopes hosting in New Zealand will encourage greater participation from Asia-Pacific nations: “The chance to exchange knowledge with global experts, while highlighting New Zealand’s unique contributions, will be invaluable.”
