Brisbane Enters a New Confident Chapter

15th December 2025

As Brisbane steps into a decade set to reshape its global profile both in business events and beyond, the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) marks its 30th year with a renewed purpose that resonates strongly with today’s associations. For many international organisers, Brisbane remains a destination worth rediscovering; a city defined by its research excellence, collaborative mindset and pioneering spirit.

Since opening its doors, BCEC has welcomed more than 26.082 events, 21.6 million attendees and contributed AUD$6.26 billion to Brisbane’s economy. Yet these numbers reflect only part of its influence. Over three decades, BCEC has become an integral part of the city’s cultural, scientific and social life, where world leaders, innovators, artists and communities can safely connect. This anniversary offers an opportunity to reintroduce Brisbane to the world as a dynamic, outward-looking city.

Distance as a Strategic Advantage

Brisbane’s geographical location has shaped a meeting destination with a calm, well-organised operating environment that international organisers increasingly value. Its safe, well-governed setting, combined with world-class infrastructure and a strong knowledge economy, has long supported BCEC’s ability to stage complex, high-level events. Global moments such as the G20 World Leaders Summit and, more recently in 2022, the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, have demonstrated the Centre’s capacity to operate at a level of political, logistical and diplomatic sophistication few venues can match.

With preparations for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games accelerating, Brisbane’s transformation is gaining momentum. Investment in sustainability, precinct development, mobility, life sciences and sports innovation is revamping the city and amplifying the very strengths associations prioritise: interdisciplinary research, policy leadership and practical impact.

A Collaborative Model Uncommon in Australia

One of Brisbane’s most compelling advantages is its cohesive approach to attracting major international events. BCEC and the Brisbane Economic Development Agency operate under a strategic “divide-and-conquer” model: BCEC handles high-yield conventions requiring a dedicated venue, while BEDA focuses on events suited to hotels and alternative spaces. This clear split allows both teams to concentrate on the bids that align with their strengths, reducing overlap and creating a more coordinated and efficient approach to attracting major events.

Supporting this is BCEC’s Convention Advocates Partnership, founded nearly 15 years ago – an invitation-only network of 84 leading researchers, clinicians and industry specialists who lend their expertise and international connections to strengthen bids. To date, this partnership has helped secure 163 national and international conferences, delivering AUD$358 million in economic impact.

Among them are globally recognised figures such as Professor Ian Frazer AC, biomedical pioneer and co-inventor of the cervical cancer vaccine; Professor Hugh Possingham, global leader in conservation; and Dr Sarah Kelly OAM, expert in sport and innovation. It is Possingham’s insight that highlights the essential role BCEC plays in advancing global knowledge: “We can only create the collaborations that lead to major breakthroughs by meeting our peers. It’s that simple. No conferences, no innovation through integration.”

Thirty Years of Purpose-Led Impact

BCEC’s 30th birthday stands as a reminder of three decades of consistent, purposeful delivery, from welcoming royalty, world leaders and Nobel-level thinkers to hosting transformative scientific and medical congresses.

Recent years have been particularly active. Events such as the World Mining Congress 2023, the IAS Conference on HIV Science 2023 and OPTIONS XII (Influenza) in 2024 illustrate BCEC’s ongoing relevance in fields driving global policy and innovation. These events are but a few in a long line of high-calibre gatherings, demonstrating that BCEC’s track record is both deep and current.

The Centre has also accumulated significant industry recognition. Notably, it was named World’s Best Convention Centre by the International Association of Congress Centres for 2016–2018, and later Runner-Up for 2020–2022, affirming its consistent performance over time.

A Pioneer in Sustainability

Environmental leadership has long been crucial to BCEC’s mentality of doing business. From joining Australia’s Greenhouse Challenge in 2002, to introducing chemical-free cleaning systems in 2011, to installing extensive solar generation and completing major LED refurbishments reducing energy usage by up to 80%, the Centre has repeatedly set the benchmark for sustainable operations. With Platinum EarthCheck Certification – held for 14 consecutive years – BCEC stands among the world’s most environmentally responsible convention centres.

As Brisbane prepares for the world’s spotlight in 2032, the city’s momentum aligns closely with global association priorities. Brisbane’s evolution and BCEC’s steady capability form a compelling combination: a forward-looking city supported by a venue with three decades of proven delivery. The Centre excels in navigating high-stakes events, complex setup, multi-sector programmes and audiences in the thousands. Whether transforming the Great Hall into a full equestrian arena or orchestrating large-scale scientific congresses, BCEC consistently demonstrates operational mastery.
