Boardroom is proud to report first a major sustainability milestone at COP29 in Baku.
The Net Zero Carbon Events (NZCE) initiative confirmed that its specialised measurement methodology will now be integrated into the United Nations’ Green Events Tool (GET), a reference tool managed by the Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD).
This integration aligns GET with the business events industry’s specific needs, allowing it to better measure and manage the environmental impact of events worldwide.
The integration, announced during a joint launch event at COP29, also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NZCE and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), formalising a pathway for continued collaboration.
James Rees, President of the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC), which oversees the NZCE initiative, said: “This is a significant leap in aligning our industry’s efforts with the UN’s standards on carbon measurement, making our events sector a true partner in global sustainability.”
UNFCCC’s Programme Officer Suriya Mues added: “The integration of NZCE into GET provides the events industry with a powerful tool to measure and reduce its carbon footprint.”
Key speakers at the launch included UNEP’s Asa Elisabeth Tynell, JMIC’s Alexander Alles, and ICCA CEO Dr. Senthil Gopinath, each affirming the necessity of such partnerships in driving sustainable progress.
