Queenstown Lands Inaugural Global Landslide Workshop, Boosting Off-Season Economy

2nd May 2025

Queenstown, New Zealand, has secured the First International Joint Workshop of JTC1 & JTC3 on Landslide Risk Assessment, Communication and Geo-education, to be held in April 2026 at the Millennium Hotel.

The event marks the first collaboration between two key international technical committees and is expected to draw 350 delegates, generating over NZ$900,000 in off-season economic impact.

The winning bid was led by the New Zealand Geotechnical Society (NZGS) with support from Tourism New Zealand Business Events and the Queenstown Convention Bureau.

Themed ‘Landslide Geo-Education and Risk’, the workshop will feature technical sessions, field trips and training modules, spotlighting the region’s landscape and its vulnerability to geohazards.

“Queenstown offers a real-world classroom for landslide science — not just in terrain, but in how we engage communities and future engineers,” said Ross Roberts of NZGS. “This isn’t just a conference, it’s a catalyst for action.”

The programme will also highlight the relaunch of the University of Canterbury’s Professional Master of Engineering Geology, reinforcing the event’s educational legacy.
