Sibos in Dubai to Shape the Future of Global Finance

27th August 2025

When the financial industry gathers in Dubai for the 2029 edition of Sibos, the conversation will not just be about payments, securities, or compliance, it will be about the architecture of global finance itself.

Words Remi Deve

As one of the most renowned busines events in the world, Sibos is organised by Swift, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, an organisation founded in 1973 that provides secure messaging services enabling more than 11,000 institutions in over 200 countries to communicate and transact. Since its launch in 1978, Sibos has evolved from a banking operations seminar into one of the most influential gatherings in the financial calendar, drawing thousands of senior executives, policymakers, and technology innovators.

In 2029, Sibos will return to Dubai, a city that last hosted the event in 2013. This decision reflects not only Dubai’s logistical readiness but also its growing role in the transformation of global finance.

At a crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa

For Alan Rowan, Head of Sibos at Swift, the choice of host city is never arbitrary. “Dubai’s strategic location at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa makes it an ideal meeting point for the global financial community,” he says. “The city offers unparalleled connectivity and accessibility for delegates from across the world.”

“Dubai also brings a proven track record, having successfully hosted Sibos in 2013, demonstrating its capability to deliver world-class events”, he adds.

The bid for 2029 was backed by the UAE Banks Federation, representing more than 50 member banks, underscoring the local industry’s commitment. But geography and support were only part of the equation. Rowan points to the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), “one of the region’s fastest-growing financial and fintech hubs, with nearly 7,000 businesses. This thriving ecosystem aligns closely with Sibos’ themes of innovation, collaboration, and digital transformation.”

A New Rotation Model

Sibos 2029 will also mark a shift in Swift’s hosting strategy. “Hosting Sibos in Dubai marks the launch of a new rotation model that includes high-growth economies in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America every four years,” Rowan explains. “This approach reinforces Swift’s commitment to strengthening its global infrastructure and fostering cross-border collaboration.”

The decision aligns with the organisation’s broader mission to innovate in an era defined by rapid technological change. “As technological advancements reshape cross-border payments, securities processing, and the rise of digital assets and currencies, Dubai offers a dynamic platform that supports the evolution of financial services through its investment in digital services, automation, and secure infrastructure,” Rowan says.

Infrastructure & Hospitality

From an operational standpoint, Dubai checks several critical boxes. Rowan describes it as offering “world-class venues, cutting-edge technology, and efficient logistics—all essential for hosting an event of Sibos’ scale.” The Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, part of the Dubai World Trade Centre complex, will serve as the venue, offering versatile spaces, internal services, and advanced facilities.

Accessibility is another draw. “Dubai’s global connectivity, supported by major airports and transport infrastructure, ensures seamless access for a global audience,” Rowan says. Delegates will find a range of accommodation and hospitality options, underpinned by what he calls “professional service standards that guarantee a smooth and comfortable experience.”

The city’s smart infrastructure, from real-time data systems to cybersecurity readiness, also dovetails with Swift’s operational priorities. “Combined with Dubai’s stable and secure environment, these factors made it a compelling choice,” Rowan concludes.

Sustainability in and out

In recent years, Sibos has woven sustainability into its planning, from energy use to community impact. “Sustainability is a core priority for Sibos, and Dubai’s commitment to green development strongly supports these efforts,” Rowan emphasises.

He points to the city’s investments in renewable energy and eco-friendly initiatives, which align with Swift’s goals to reduce carbon emissions and minimise waste. The venue itself is LEED-certified, incorporating energy-efficient systems and smart building technologies.

Transport is part of the equation as well. Dubai promotes electric and hybrid transport options, including taxis and public transit, helping reduce emissions from delegate travel. The city’s recycling programmes and zero-waste initiatives extend to the hospitality sector, where many hotels and caterers operate with eco-conscious practices.

Dubai’s broader climate strategy, including its Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and experience hosting COP28, further reinforce its credentials. “It’s a forward-looking partner in climate action—making it a fitting host for a greener Sibos,” Rowan observes.

A Platform for Dialogue

Beyond the logistical and environmental dimensions, Sibos in Dubai will serve as a convening point for a diverse global community. Rowan sees this as crucial: “Hosting Sibos in Dubai reinforces our vision, bringing together stakeholders from across geographies to collaborate on the future of finance. It also reflects Swift’s dedication to inclusivity, ensuring that the dialogue around transformation is shaped by a broad spectrum of voices and experiences.”

The conference’s agenda will likely mirror the evolving challenges and opportunities of the financial sector—from digital currencies and instant payments to regulatory harmonisation and cybersecurity. Dubai’s own innovation ecosystem, anchored by the DIFC and supported by government-led digital transformation strategies, offers a relevant backdrop for these debates.

While 2029 is still some years away, planning for Sibos is a multi-year process. The choice of Dubai signals that the event will not only be a showcase of financial innovation but also a testbed for sustainable event practices in the Middle East.

Rowan sums it up: “Sibos in Dubai will mark an important step in Swift’s journey to shape the future of finance. With its innovation-driven ecosystem, global connectivity, and commitment to sustainability, Dubai offers the ideal stage for meaningful dialogue and collaboration across the global financial ecosystem.”
