Strasbourg Steps Forward

15th July 2025

Long known as a symbolic heart of Europe, Strasbourg has emerged as a leading force in the conference landscape. No longer just the seat of European institutions, the city is carving out a distinct identity as a destination of choice for high-profile scientific and medical congresses. At the intersection of tradition and innovation, the Alsatian capital is where cutting-edge research meets cultural depth—and where history is leveraged to shape the future.

Words Remi Deve

The summer of 2025 is marking a milestone for Strasbourg. The city is hosting two major international congresses back-to-back: the International Congress on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP), with more than 1,600 delegates from 57 countries and the Society of Robotic Surgery (SRS), with 2,000 participants.

These aren’t just wins for the Strasbourg’s event calendar, they are emblematic of its growing appeal to the global scientific community. Champions like Professor Carmen Schroeder (ESCAP) and Professor Jacques Marescaux from IRCAD, the Minimally Invasive Surgery & Endoscopic Training Center, have played pivotal roles in attracting these events, building on Strasbourg’s world-class medical and research institutions.

This momentum is not limited to one-off successes. Strasbourg’s Congress Centre is the recurring host of international meetings like the European Materials Research Society (EMRS), SPIE Photonics Europe, and the European Society for Vascular Biology (ESVB). Looking ahead, the city has already secured key international conferences such as the European Congress on Intrapartum Care (2027), the RNA Annual Meeting (2027), the International Symposium on Fluorine Chemistry (2027), or, for example  FESSH Congress 2028 and its 2,000 delegates, confirming its long-term relevance and strategic planning.

At the core of this growth lies the Strasbourg Congress Centre, one of the first European congress centres, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Since opening in 1975, the venue has undergone constant transformation, with over €200 million invested in recent years to meet the expectations of 21st-century congress organisers. Its efforts have been recognised with credentials and awards as France’s Best Convention Centre (2023, 2024), the ISO 20121 certification, and the Kréa RSE Prize for its innovation in social responsibility practices—thanks in part to a pioneering partnership with Emmaüs and the creation of an on-site local artisan boutique.

More than a venue, Strasbourg Congress Centre, managed by the city of Strasbourg and GL Events Venues, is a strategic catalyst, powering the city’s international reach and generating €192 million in economic impact. Its modular architecture, state-of-the-art technology, and walkable access to European institutions and cultural landmarks make it ideal for events of all sizes and formats. Its ongoing engagement with sustainability and community-based innovation also reflects the evolving values of today’s association organisers and delegates, as Christophe Caillaud-Joos, CEO of Strasbourg Events states.

For Ramona Fischer, Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer, maintaining Strasbourg’s leadership among Europe’s top international meeting destinations relies on a proactive strategy: forging strong partnerships, harnessing the full potential of the local ecosystem, destination DNA, and expertise, aligning the city’s distinctive strengths with the ambitions of the congresses it seeks to host, and continuously adapting to meet clients’ evolving needs.

With 11,000 hotel rooms, high-speed rail access (1h45 from Paris), and a vibrant ecosystem that spans research, sustainability, and European politics, Strasbourg is uniquely positioned, offering a narrative of continuity and reinvention, of intellectual gravity and human-scale experience.
