Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre has been awarded the Toitū net carbonzero certification, marking a major achievement in its commitment to environmentally responsible operations.
Achieving this status in just one year after setting the goal, Te Pae Christchurch has demonstrated exemplary efforts in reducing lifecycle emissions through various sustainable practices. These include the design of the building, the adoption of renewable energy, the recovery and reuse of food waste, and the installation of a chemical-free e-water system.
This certification follows Te Pae Christchurch’s recent win at the 2023 Skål International Sustainable Tourism Awards, further underscoring its leadership in sustainable operations within the industry.
“Many of our sustainability initiatives are being led by Te Pae Christchurch team’s younger generation, which underscores our commitment to creating a positive long-term impact and a lasting sustainability legacy,” says Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre General Manager Ross Steele.
A key aspect of Te Pae Christchurch’s strategy is its local purchasing policy, which has notably contributed to minimizing emissions. With 85% of purchases from local organizations, freight on purchased goods accounts for less than 1% of total emissions.
Despite a record level of activity, Te Pae Christchurch continues to prioritize sustainability, supported by Toitū Envirocare, New Zealand’s leading environmental programme. Looking forward, Te Pae aims to extend its sustainability efforts by collaborating with partners and clients to reduce the environmental impact of events.
