Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre has been recognised for its pioneering approach to sustainability at the 2025 New Zealand HR Awards, winning The Building Sustainability through People Award.
Judges commended the centre’s ability to connect its team to a meaningful purpose, embedding environmental and social responsibility across its daily operations.
Vanessa McBean, Director of Human Resources at Te Pae Christchurch, emphasised that sustainability shapes every stage of employee engagement — from recruitment and onboarding to professional development and wellbeing initiatives. “With over half of our casual team aged between 16 and 24, we were particularly aware of the importance of our approach to sustainability in attracting and retaining talent,” she says.
Te Pae Christchurch fosters a deep sense of collective pride by actively involving its team in sustainability initiatives — from dedicated CSR training during induction to hands-on participation in recycling, e-water, and waste reduction programmes — while also extending its impact through community activities that support the region’s sustainable social and economic development.
Te Pae Christchurch General Manager Ross Steele said: “Achievement of awards like this reflects the commitment of the whole team – led by our Human Resource and sustainability champions across the organisation – to living our commitment to sustainability goals through every aspect of our operation.”
