Tallinn Is The European Green Capital 2023

20th January 2023

The capital of Estonia, Tallinn, has been given the title of European Capital 2023.

A systemic approach to green governance and interlinked strategic goals, which reflect the ambitions of the European Green Deal were the winning reasons for the city.

The Tallinn European Green Capital program will take place throughout 2023 with more than 60 environmental events planned.

During the opening weekend, on 19-21 January, the Opening Conference on Sustainable Cities will take place under the topic “Fantastic Creatures: Making European Cities Safe, Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable”, with a number of activities to follow.

Examples include (among others) the Test in Tallinn measure, which invite companies around the world to test their smart solutions in the city; the Greentech Week in November, promoting eco-innovation and cooperation between leading companies, investors and scientists; and the Green Tracks project, which aims to improve the quality of green areas and bring more greenery to the city.

“The title of green capital gives us an ideal opportunity to formulate goals, create a network and choose better means to make Tallinn a greener and more sustainable city. The green capital year provides a good opportunity to involve people and organizations to growing Tallinn’s green and innovative development. We want to build a strong foundation so that the benefits and impact of the title year stay with us and do not fade when the year is over,” Mr. Mihhail Kõlvart, Mayor of Tallinn said.
