Applications have opened for the BCEC LSQ Bio-Innovation Bursary, a joint initiative by the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre and Life Sciences Queensland to support emerging life sciences researchers across the state.
Created as part of BCEC’s 30th year legacy initiatives and LSQ’s 15th anniversary year, the bursary was developed through the Centre’s Convention Advocates Partnership. It is designed to strengthen the link between research and industry in areas such as medical biotechnology, agricultural innovation and biofuels.
The bursary provides targeted, flexible funding to help an early or mid-career researcher move promising work closer to real-world application. Rather than funding research in isolation, it supports activities that build industry collaboration and research impact, including collaborative projects, industry placements, commercialisation work, specialised resources and targeted engagement opportunities.
Valued at up to $25,000, the bursary is open to Queensland-based life sciences researchers typically between two and 12 years post-PhD, with assessment based on career stage, proposed impact, industry engagement and future potential.
Professor Frank Gannon, Chair of LSQ, said the bursary offers support at a decisive career stage. “It is designed to build momentum at a pivotal point in a researcher’s career and support the continued growth of Queensland’s life sciences sector,” he said.
Kym Guesdon, General Manager of the Legends Global-managed BCEC, said the initiative shows how convention centres can play a broader role beyond hosting events. “Through our Convention Advocates Partnership, we’re embedded in the sectors behind those events and the people driving them,” she said.
The recipient will be selected through a competitive, independently reviewed process and recognised alongside Gene Awards recipients at the LSQ Gene Awards on 11 September. Full eligibility criteria and application guidelines are available via Life Sciences Queensland.
