Auckland Secures Global AI-in-Medicine Congress for 2027

6th November 2025

Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland will host the prestigious 30th Annual Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Conference (MICCAI 2027) from 26 September to 1 October 2027, drawing nearly 3,000 global experts in AI-driven healthcare, medical imaging, and robotic surgery to the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC).

The successful bid, led by Associate Professor Jichao Zhao of the Auckland Bioengineering Institute and Professor Terry Peters of Canada’s Roberts Research Institute, was supported by Auckland Convention Bureau, a division of Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, and Tourism New Zealand Business Events.

“AI-powered medical imaging and robotics are transforming healthcare in settings such as rural areas of New Zealand,”said Zhao, General Chair of MICCAI 2027. “This conference will tackle pressing health equity challenges in the Pacific region and beyond.”

Mayor Wayne Brown called the win “another great step for Auckland,” linking it to the city’s Innovation and Technology Alliance and its broader ambitions to become a globally competitive innovation hub.

Themed ‘From the Pacific to the World: Driving MICCAI’s Impact Toward Equitable HealthCare’, the event will feature a diverse programme including thematic workshops, clinical sessions, and research showcases with a focus on Māori and Pacific health outcomes.

“We look forward to showcasing Auckland’s vibrant research culture and diverse health-tech ecosystem,” said Ken Pereira, Head of Auckland Convention Bureau.
