Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland has been chosen to host the IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) in 2028, attracting over 2,000 global experts to the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC).
IGARSS 2028 will focus on advancing knowledge in remote sensing and Earth observation technologies, which are critical for addressing challenges such as disaster monitoring, risk assessment, and environmental change.
The successful bid was spearheaded by leading academics, including Professor Alejandro C. Frery (Victoria University of Wellington), Associate Professor Gabor Kereszturi (Massey University), and Professor Matthew Wilson (University of Canterbury), with support from Auckland’s geospatial and aerospace sector, including Rocket Lab.
Ken Pereira, Head of Auckland Convention Bureau, said: “This symposium will not only showcase Auckland’s research and innovation but also strengthen international ties in geoscience and aerospace, further solidifying New Zealand’s position in these fields.”
General Manager of the NZICC Prue Daly added: “NZICC is proud to have been a partner in the successful bid for the IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Ka pai to everyone involved in bringing this important conference to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and we look forward to welcoming the IEEE delegates in 2028.”
