On Earth Day 2026, the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) used the occasion to highlight the sustainability outcomes of a major refurbishment programme, reporting a 90.7 per cent resource recovery rate across the works.
The upgrades covered a range of public and event spaces, including seating and carpet works in the Plaza Auditorium, carpet replacement across the Boulevard Room and concourse areas, flooring upgrades in the Plaza Link Foyer, meeting room ceiling and lighting improvements, replacement of the Great Hall operable walls and the installation of a new large-format LED screen in the Plaza Ballroom.
In total, 166,480 kilograms of material were generated, with 151,072 kilograms recycled. BCEC said 100 per cent of metal materials were recycled, while synthetic mineral fibre and plasterboard reached an 80 per cent recovery rate. Dedicated separation systems were also used to improve diversion outcomes across key material streams.
One of the strongest circular results came from carpet removal. Of the 9.7 tonnes taken out during the works, 3.5 tonnes were diverted for reuse rather than recycling, helping extend the life of the materials. The centre also refurbished 620 Auditorium chairs instead of replacing them, reducing waste and avoiding the resource impact linked to manufacturing new seating.
According to BCEC, the results underline the value of embedding sustainability criteria into procurement, planning and delivery from the outset. The outcomes also reinforce the centre’s broader environmental strategy, supported by its EarthCheck Platinum Certification.
