Instability Moves to the Centre of Congress Planning

27th May 2026

New research from IAPCO shows that global conflict, policy change and socio-political instability are now materially affecting the international meetings and conferences sector.

Its 2026 Global Socio-Political Impact Survey, conducted with AIPCAMC InstituteICCAIFES and PCMA, gathered responses from 130 organisations worldwide.

According to the findings, 73.84% of respondents said global conflicts had affected their ability to plan or host international meetings, up from 53.92% in 2025. Travel disruption has also intensified, with 65.38% reporting impacts on clients or participants, while 58.46% cited reduced international attendance. The full report also points to increased costs, event relocation and growing caution around destinations perceived as politically unstable.

IAPCO President Sissi Lignou said the findings show that instability is directly affecting the exchange of knowledge. “Conferences and meetings are where knowledge is shared, research is advanced, relationships are built and industries move forward. These findings show that global socio-political instability is now directly affecting that essential exchange.”

IAPCO CEO Martin Boyle said the research underlines the strategic role of accredited PCOs in advising associations and destinations. “From contingency planning and destination advice to stakeholder confidence, budget management and participant safety, PCOs are helping clients adapt to changing global conditions while making informed decisions in a fast-changing world.”
