Wellington will host the 62nd ISOCARP World Planning Congress from 27-30 April 2027, bringing around 500 city planners, policymakers, researchers and urban innovators to Tākina Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre.
Hosted by Wellington City Council, with support from Business Events Wellington and Tourism New Zealand Business Events, the congress is expected to contribute nearly NZ$975,000 to the local economy. Its programme will address sustainable urban development, equity, regenerative practices, technology and climate change.
ISOCARP President Elisabeth Belpaire said New Zealand offers a significant setting from which to rethink cities and regions. “At a time of accelerating biodiversity loss, climate change, social and geopolitical uncertainty, hosting the 62nd ISOCARP World Planning Congress in Wellington places the Pacific at the centre of the conversation.”
ISOCARP Board Director for Congresses and Events Dr Greg Mews added: “Wellington becomes more than a backdrop; it becomes a living laboratory for integrated planning practices.”
Wellington City Mayor Andrew Little welcomed the decision, calling it an opportunity for “bold ideas and local innovation” to help shape future cities. Business Events Wellington Manager Loryn Blaikie said the congress would strengthen Wellington’s profile as a centre for urban planning, sustainability and liveability.
