Melbourne to Take Centre Stage in Global Fight Against Hepatitis in 2027

28th March 2025

Melbourne has been selected to host the Global Hepatitis Summit in 2027, reinforcing its standing as a centre of medical research and public health innovation.

The city’s successful bid was led by the Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) in collaboration with the Burnet Institute and the Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity.

Held biennially, the Summit is a premier platform for the latest scientific advances in liver disease, covering areas such as viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

In 2027, it will convene at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre during the first half of the year.

The event is expected to draw a global delegation of clinicians, researchers, and public health professionals for four days of plenary sessions, clinical workshops, exhibitions, and networking opportunities.

Julia Swanson, Chief Executive of MCB, noted, “Melbourne’s successful bid to host the Global Hepatitis Summit 2027 is a testament to our commitment for advancing innovation in healthcare.  Our strong community of academics and researchers, as well as our two world-class institutes in the Burnet and Doherty, showcase Melbourne’s unparalleled ability to foster collaboration and create transformational legacies.”

Professor Brendan Crabb AC of the Burnet Institute added, “The Global Hepatitis Summit is an opportunity to bring together hepatitis researchers from across the world, and for the Victorian and Australian medical research community to showcase our research capabilities and to meet and collaborate with like-minded researchers to address this global health issue.”

The announcement joins a growing list of high-profile international medical meetings headed to Melbourne, including the World Congress of Gastroenterology 2025 and the International Diabetes Federation’s Western Pacific Regional Congress 2026.
