Wellington’s close connection to water has helped it secure the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) Asia Pacific Division Conference for October 2028.
The event will bring together leading experts to discuss sustainable water management under the theme ‘Water Our Treasure’, a timely focus amid global climate challenges.
The successful bid was led by Dr Gregory De Costa of the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand and Professor Alan Brent from Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, with support from Business Events Wellington and Tourism New Zealand Business Events.
Dr De Costa highlighted Wellington’s suitability: “As a city deeply tied to water – from its harbour to its reliance on the Waiwhetū aquifer – Wellington exemplifies the complex challenges of managing water sustainably.”
The conference will also showcase New Zealand’s leadership in water-related research and innovation, attracting international academics and students.
Tourism New Zealand’s Penelope Ryan noted the broader impact: “This event will not only boost Wellington’s economy but also strengthen its global reputation as a hub for knowledge and talent.”
