A joint study by The Hague & Partners Convention Bureau and ESAE has found that 88% of associations anticipate geopolitical instability impacting operations, with 85% already affected.
Conducted among 99 senior association and not‑for‑profit leaders, the research reveals a sector under pressure.
Only 13% feel well prepared, while 72% are somewhat prepared and 14% are not prepared at all. Notably, 77% flagged the rise of populism as a significant concern, with 30% worried it could influence board decisions.
In response, associations are doubling down: 81% reaffirm mission and values, 63% enhance governance, and 61% diversify boards. Despite drawing on crisis‑management lessons from COVID‑19 and the financial crisis, 42% recognise persistent knowledge gaps.
Event planning is already shifting: 28% have moved events to politically stable locations, though only 27% have reported direct disruption in Europe.
The study is Phase 1 of broader research, with a forthcoming white paper and global rollout slated for release at IMEX America.
