With a long history of innovation and sustainability in its agenda, Berlin has decided to join the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-Index) in order to promote sustainability for all its sectors, including the business events one. Back in 2019, visitBerlin launched Sustainable Meetings Berlin, an innovative initiative developed in a multi-stakeholder process, which aims to bring the destination to a higher level of sustainability management when it comes to events.
This decision means that the Berlin Convention Office of visitBerlin will make efforts to benchmark the sustainability of Berlin, improve its sustainability strategy, and increase awareness of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals among other things.
Marco Oelschlegel, CMP, Director Conventions, Berlin Convention Office (BCO), visitBerlin, says: “Through sustainable MICE solutions we are doing our part to position the industry in an innovative and climate-friendly way. The Global Destination Sustainability Movement offers the opportunity to jointly promote the sustainable development of destinations with great transparency and various instruments. For this reason, it is a logical and consistent step for us as Destination Berlin to be part of GDSM”.
