Calgary TELUS Convention Centre hosted the first DEFSEC West from 24 to 26 March, marking the defence trade show’s debut in Western Canada and generating an estimated CAD 3 million in economic impact.
The inaugural event brought more than 130 industry and government exhibitors and over 1,700 delegates to downtown Calgary, creating a new platform for defence and security collaboration in the region after 24 years of DEFSEC Atlantic in Halifax. Organisers said the show fills a long-standing gap in Western Canada for industry and government to meet, build partnerships and explore procurement and supply chain opportunities.
“There has not been a defense trade show that brings together talent from across Western Canada and connects them with national leaders, global primes, and key stakeholders from Ottawa until now,” said organiser Colin Stephenson, Executive Director of DEFSEC West.
Federal and provincial government representatives, industry leaders, academics and international delegates gathered to discuss emerging security challenges, defence innovation and cross-sector collaboration.
“Hosting DEFSEC West reinforces the CTCC’s role as a catalyst for impactful business events that drive knowledge-sharing, innovation, and economic growth,” said Kurby Court, President and CEO of Calgary TELUS Convention Centre.
Tourism Calgary also said the event highlights the role conventions can play in strengthening business links and diversifying the city’s economy. Organisers added that DEFSEC West aims to leave a lasting legacy in Western Canada by helping SMEs build face-to-face relationships and connect with major procurement opportunities. The 2026 edition was also supported by volunteers from Sistership Calgary, a local dragon boat association for breast cancer survivors.
