Indigenous Voices Leading the Fight Against Cancer in Rotorua

4th February 2025

Rotorua and Hei Āhuru Mōwai Māori Cancer Leadership Aotearoa will host the World Indigenous Cancer Conference (WICC) 2026, bringing together 600 health professionals, researchers, and advocates to tackle cancer disparities in Indigenous communities.

Now in its 4th edition, the bi-annual conference will provide a platform for sharing culturally grounded cancer care solutions. Hei Āhuru Mōwai, supported by Tourism New Zealand Business Events and RotoruaNZ, led the successful bid.

Hei Āhuru Mōwai Chief Executive Gary Thompson highlighted the importance of Indigenous leadership, sharing Māori health innovations while learning from global counterparts: “This conference is about solutions – turning disparities around and strengthening Indigenous cancer leadership worldwide.”

Rooted in Māori tikanga (protocols) and storytelling, WICC 2026 will integrate Rotorua’s rich cultural heritage alongside scientific discussions.

Vanessa Wallace, Business Events Manager at RotoruaNZ, said: “By hosting this conference, Rotorua proudly showcases its rich Māori culture, offering delegates an authentic and immersive experience in a city that celebrates its heritage.”
