Wellington, New Zealand, has been selected to host the 21st WONCA World Rural Health Conference in 2026, under the theme Whānau Ora: Integrating mātauranga Māori indigenous knowledge with rural health for a thriving future.
Led by Hauora Taiwhenua Rural Health Network with support from Te Rōpū Ārahi, the winning bid stood out for its focus on Indigenous health models, community-led care, and New Zealand’s commitment to rural health equity.
Strong backing from Business Events Wellington, Tourism New Zealand, and government agencies helped secure the bid.
“This is an opportunity to spotlight our innovative rural and Māori-led health strategies on a global stage,” said Fiona Bolden, Chairperson of Hauora Taiwhenua.
The conference will take place at the new Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre, contributing an estimated NZD 2.7 million to the local economy and drawing international delegates during New Zealand’s shoulder season.
“This is a milestone for New Zealand’s rural health community,” said Dr Grant Davidson, CEO of Hauora Taiwhenua. “We look forward to welcoming colleagues from across the world.”
