12th July 2024

Wellington has been selected to host the World Congress of the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE) in 2028, marking the first time this event will take place in New Zealand.

The congress, set to be held at Tākina Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre, is expected to draw over 700 global experts.

Sarah Wirth, Head of Technology at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School and Vice President of IFHE Pacific, led the successful bid with support from Business Events Wellington and Tourism New Zealand Business Events.

The IFHE, a consultative body at the United Nations, promotes the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Wirth highlighted that the congress will showcase New Zealand’s contributions to sustainable living, health, nutrition, and economic empowerment.

Wellington was chosen for its culinary excellence, innovation in textiles, sustainable practices, and the high-quality facilities at Tākina.

Tourism New Zealand General Manager NZ & Business Events Bjoern Spreitzer said: “Attracting the World Congress of the International Federation for Home Economics is an excellent example of the positive economic and wider social benefits that business events deliver to New Zealand. I hope the delegates get a chance to enjoy all that Aotearoa New Zealand has to offer while they are here.”
